Vowel Spaces within and across Language Communities Andrew R. Plummer, Lucie Ménard , Benjamin Munson, Mary E. Beckman Dept. of Linguistics, The Ohio State University, Columbus, OH, USA département de linguistique, Université du Québec à Montréal, Montréal, Canada Dept. of Speech-Language-Hearing Sciences, University of Minnesota, Minneapolis, MN, USA {plummer,mbeckman}@ling.ohio-state.edu, [email protected], [email protected] Abstract We investigate vowel category perception within and across languages by proffering a statistical methodology for creating vowel category response surfaces over maximal vowel spaces based on the responses of subjects from five different language communities to vowel stimuli generated by an age-varying articulatory synthesizer. The methodology is based on an additive modeling approach to surface regression within the general smoothing spline approach to statistical modeling. We also put forward a simple method for the comparison of surfaces and demonstrate its basic utility by comparing response surfaces derived from Greek and Japanese subjects. We discuss the results of the comparison with attention to the potential of the approach to reveal meaningful differences between and within the vowel systems of different language communities.

Acoustic Analysis of Persian EFL Learners' Pronunciation of English Vowels

This paper reports the results of an experimental study on non-native production of English vowels. Two groups of Persian EFL learners varying in language proficiency were tested on their ability to produce the nine plain vowels of American English. Vowel production accuracy was assessed by means of acoustic measurements. Ladefoged and Maddison’s (1996) F1 F2 measurements for American English v...

Vlam Corner Vowel Stimuli

Speech signals vary substantially in a number of their key properties, with the variability deriving from, among other things, talkers’ age and gender. Speech processing requires resolution of this variation, necessitating interpretation of age and gender information in the signal. In some signals, the age and gender are not clear from acoustic information alone. In these cases there may be sub...

Production of English Lexical Stress by Persian EFL Learners

This study examines the phonetic properties of lexical stress in English produced by Persian speakers learning English as a foreign language. The four most reliable phonetic correlates of English lexical stress, namely fundamental frequency, duration, intensity, and vowel quality were measured across Persian speakers’ production of the stressed and unstressed syllables of five English disyllabi...

The Effect of English Vowel-Recognition Training on Beginner and Advanced Iranian ESL Learners

This study was an attempt to investigate the effect of vowel-recognition training on beginner and advanced Iranian ESL learners. A total of 36 adult Iranian ESL learners (18 advanced and 18 beginners) who were students of various majors at Memorial University (MUN) were recruited for the study. Advanced participants had the experience of living in Canada for at least three years while beginners...

Rediscovering the Co-Occurrence Principles of vowel inventories: a Complex Network Approach

In this work, we attempt to capture patterns of co-occurrence across vowel systems and at the same time figure out the nature of the force leading to the emergence of such patterns. For this purpose we define a weighted network where the vowels are the nodes and an edge between two nodes (read vowels) signify their co-occurrence likelihood over the vowel inventories. Through this network we ide...
